Librarians and library potential: What computer skills are necessary to be a librarian?

This question is for librarians, who are recent graduates, those in a matter of the library and program information science and those who have been working for a short time as a librarian. I have a nutrition degree without any computer classes. I only know the basics such as sending and receiving email, surf the net, and use Word to write. So 1) What computer skills are necessary for a librarian today? (Please include the kind of librarian who is / will be, public or private library and skills needed) 2) Do you think that would have to take additional computer classes to prepare for a master of library and information science? What kind of computer do you recommend? 3) In general, what kind of library that requires less computer literacy and information technology? What types need it most? Thank you very much. Your help is greatly appreciated.

As a librarian solo to the profession is currently working in a company (ie, special / specialized) library, I must confess that today's librarians in all sectors (ie public, academic, special (specialized), school, etc.) must be proficient in the use of computers and a variety of software applications. Gone are the days of card catalogs! To better understand the scope and variety of required computer skills, I encourage you to read carefully the desirability and computer skills required in the job descriptions contained in several of the following websites. Although I graduated with my Masters in Library and Information (MLIS) back in 1999 I have been working in libraries since 1991. I suggest you master the Office suite of Microsoft applications. Wet feet: as a volunteer in a library in their local area, whether public, academic (ie college), special (ie, corporate, high tech, etc), or school (Ie, low, medium, high) libraries. If you are lucky to have a fence of Library and Information Science Program, I encourage you to make an appointment to discuss its future potential as a librarian. Because you have a degree in nutrition, have an advantage in the academic and science of librarianship. Oh, and not worry about computers! If you come to Yahoo Answers, which is obviously a bit more competent than you give yourself credit. And be prepared, the library is very demanding but rewarding profession. Not for the faint of heart! If you really like to help others, furthering the information, and provide a first customer service to users, this race is definitely for you! The other factor to consider is that as more and more baby boomers retire the next ten years will be a shortage of librarians incomprehensible of all kinds, so once you earn their MLIS, you will have a free for all terms of career options!
