Do you cook your dog’s daily meals?
My dog has a very sensitive stomach due to past health issues. We give her limited ingredient dog food and treats (which are quite pricey) and she does pretty well with them. I am contemplating doing the “home-cooked” diet with ground beef, chicken, turkey and rice with vegetables. I know dogs also need vitamins and nutrients from bones, etc. found in processed dog foods. Are there inexpensive supplements available for this? Which would you recommend? Are there any credible websites with recipes?
The food we give her now ends up being $40-$50 per month (she’s about 12 lbs.). Home-cooked could be cheaper than the processed food, but I am concerned about the cost of supplements and being able to provide adequate nutrition.
To clarify, by “home-cooked” I just meant nothing canned, packaged or store-bought. So any suggestions about either a raw or cooked diet made at home would be appreciated. My intention is to eliminate all store-bought dog food and feed her this new diet.
I feed prey model raw and I don’t supplement at all. Some will supplement with fish oil, I just feed fish instead.
My “recipe” consists of 80% meat 10% edible bone 5% liver 5% other secreting organ. I don’t meet these percentages everyday but over the course of a couple weeks.
Bone in chicken is the best starter food for a raw diet. You feed just the bone in chicken for a couple weeks and then you can slowly start adding in the organs and other protein sources. Once your dog is used to many different foods you can switch it up daily.
Variety is key with a raw diet.
I don’t buy special meat for the dogs, it comes from the same places I get mine. I watch sales to keep prices down, I feed about 200lbs worth of dog between my 4. But for a 12lb dog the roasts I buy for 1 day worth of meals would feed yours for awhile. 
I do avoid meats with added solutions, for example poultry is notorious for added broths and sodium. If the fine print on the poultry package says anything other than “May contain up to a % of water” I pass on it.
Prey model raw is only as expensive as you make it, and for me it’s very convenient and easy. There is of course a learning curve but once you get the hang of it it’s just as simple as scooping kibble from a bag.
