please help diagnose this digestive disorder?

I have a 3 1/2 year old half brother who has had digestion problems since birth. he vomits at least 2 or 3 times a week, usually after crying excessively, sometimes without warning, and sometimes after being active. he eats very little, and is quite thin. he is also a VERY picky eater (maybe that has nothing to do with this) and only eats 5 or 6 types of food and wont touch anything else. he is not talking at all yet, except for maybe 2 or 3 words (maybe this is due to slow development b/c of improper nutrition?). the vomit is not green, and usually the food he eats many hours before comes out in the vomit (slow digestion, i guess). our pediatrician is stupid and he always says everything is fine, and that he will grow out of it. something needs to be done, though, because i feel he is not developing normally.

Hi Nida. Your half brother absolutely must be tested for Celiac Disease (CD). CD is a COMMON disorder – it occurs in about 1 in 100 Americans. Sadly, because it is a nutritional disorder, medical doctors rarely diagnose it (they only diagnose about 3% of cases!).

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disease that damages the lining of the small intestine where most digestion and absorption of nutrients occurs. It is caused by an allergic reaction to the proteins in wheat, rye and barley called glutens/gliadins. Glutens are in almost all foods – so this might explain your brother’s picky eating!

He must be tested for this disorder. You will need a referral to a specialist – a doctor who actually diagnoses CD regularly. Frankly, if his pediatrician hasn’t alreadly performed multiple tests for CD, I would throw the “malpractice” word at him/her!

Full disclosure: I am a Celiac patient. I have suffered from it all my life. Numerous medical doctors failed to make the diagnosis – they didn’t even test me for it! I finally decided I must have this disease and had myself tested (after 50 years of suffering!) I too, was an extremely picky eater as a child.
