Do energy shot mini-beverages pose any significant health risks to 12 year old boys?
I have a 12 year old boy who is showing real promise in the sport of wrestling. For years on his own, he has liked to do push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups and general exercise that will make him stronger. He is average height and weight for his age but is generally a bit stronger and has more lean muscle than his counterparts.
He wants to buy 5-Hour Energy Shots to assist with his work-outs and performance in the wrestling ring. The convenience store clerk claims he is too young to buy them on his own, although I do not see any age restrictions or warnings on the labels.
I understand that nutrition can be age-specific and that sometimes growing adolescents have different requirements. But are there any health risks to a 12 year old taking an oral, over-the-counter energy shot to improve their duration when working out or competing athletically?
Well, here in my neck of the woods, you need to be 18 to buy them. Meaning the FDA has ruled it unsafe for non-adults.
I would say they are pretty trust worthy in their reasons, what ever they may be. Granted he won’t die from using it, but to me it makes no sense to work out and stress your heart more when the caffeine has it going fast already.
Your boy is only 12, once maturity is reached, his testosterone will aid in him building muscle and such.
