Breeding practices- then and now?
All day long all night long on this site: “I wanna breed my____”
Newpaper ads: AKC from $99!!!!! Web sites: No Red Tape! No questions asked! We take Visa! We ship!
Years ago I remember general ignorance when it came to pet reproduction- a LOT of people didn’t think twice about spay/neuter. But most weren’t trying to make a buck…
When I was a kid I knew lots of folks with “Yorkie-Poos or ShihPoos or _______doodles.” But no one called them that. They called them mutts. And I don’t remember any of my friends’ parents PAYING for their mutts….
Do you think breeding practices (or the lack thereof) are growing worse and less responsible? Do you think it’s ironic that as medical care and nutrition for dogs are at an all-time high, their overall quality seems to be diminishing due to bad breeding?
Has anyone else noticed this???
Thanks in advance…
I think it follows very closely on the heel of the lack of responsibility a lot of people show for many of the things in life. The sense of entitlement simply overwhelms.
Yes, quality in many breeds is low. From my viewpoint as an exhibitor/trainer/breeder even SHOW breeders are not always doing what is best for their breed. Right now it is HARD to find a well-constructed Bernese MTN Dog because the huge push over the last 10 years has been “we want bigger!” and the fastest way to get bigger is to straighten out the angles… leading to REALLY structurally unsound dogs… Add to that the issue of longevity and buying a GOOD Bernese Mtn Dog is really difficult (I looked for 2 years and that was from the GOOD breeders!). I don’t even want to talk about the low quality, weedy looking dogs produced by the backyard greeders!
Edit: I am first, and foremost a Samoyed breeder (my grandparents bred them, I’ve owned for 36 years and been exhibiting 23+ years and breeding nearly 20 years)… which is why when I became involved in Bernese I was SHOCKED at the lack of structural integrity… eggbeater fronts due to lack of proper layback combined with lack of angulation are too common and underangulated, fly-away rears– a Bernese (and a Samoyed) should NEVER be airborne when gaiting as it is completely inefficient for hauling… nor should they be plodding. I’ve been to Bernese Nat’ls all over the country, I’ve lived in the midwest and in the Pacific NW (dogs are a bit better here– meaning I can find 2 or 3 at a 35 dog showing that *I* consider decent) Overall, I’d say at any given dogshow I can find in Samoyeds about 90% pretty good dogs and in Bernese maybe 50% on a good day. I don’t give two hoots about markings or head style I want dogs who can WORK and who have a sound temperament (which for me means “will stand for exam” and “doesn’t try to bite every dog that comes near it”. I like the dogs I have now… but *I* am not thrilled about showing the male I’ve been training as a Service Dog- his front is not great – although several breeders have told me it would be a shame not to show him… I may, I may not before he goes to his assistance partner.
