What kind of laptop should I get for college? I think I’m going with a PC?

I have been researching and comparing the Mac Laptops and the PC laptops. Most are telling me that for college, it’s just best to get a good PC. So, I am going with that. What I want to know is what kind of PC laptop should I go with?

I know NOTHING about computers lol. All I remember is names like Dell, Toshiba, HP, Compaq, and that’s about it. I’m assuming these are just brands? I am electronic-illiterate. I just want a good laptop that is simple to control and does great work. I really want fast internet, I want it to be longer lasting (not always have to go for repairs every few months or anything like that), and just to be efficient. I want all microsoft office works, like word, excel, and powerpoint, and maybe even publisher. My major is dietetics and nutrition, by the way. I do have to take this computer course that deals with spreadsheets, databases, and all that fun stuff.

Thanks :)

Ok. You know nothing about computers. Let’s educate you a little.

Yes, the names you know are just Brands. In fact, Compaq used to be a separate company many years ago… but HP bought them. Now, all those Compaq computers you see are actually made by HP.

You want really fast internet. Well, that has nothing to do with the computer you buy. It really doesn’t. It has everything to do with the internet connection you use. So, you can buy the most expensive, most advanced laptop on the planet, and if you get online through a slow internet connection… you will have a slow internet connection. Conversely, you could buy a super cheap $199 netbook from Walmart with a sloooow processor, and connect it to the internet with a 50mbps provider and be blazing through web pages. So, you can just discard that desire from this equation.

Longer lasting. Well, that is a toughie. Companies that build laptops might actually make laptops, but they are in business to make MONEY! They make their money by getting you to buy their products. Companies like HP and Dell have figured out that you will want to buy a laptop every 2 to 3 years… so their laptops only last about that long. Also, since all computer hard drives typically only last between 3 to 5 years… it works out for them that when the hard drive is expected to fail, so is the rest of the laptop. Companies like Toshiba, Apple, Asus… they build products that last longer, and retain their value longer. Yes, Apple products are more limited in their variety, and they cost more. Asus products are a little more expensive than Toshiba, and companies like HP use Asus products in their assemblies. Toshiba makes the hard drives that some of these companies use, Toshiba makes the Flash memory that some of these companies use, and Toshiba only makes laptops… they don’t make any desktop computers.

You want all Microsoft Office Works. You mean you want Microsoft Office. Microsoft Works is an outdated product. Also, Microsoft Office isn’t free, and doesn’t come free with any computer. You can expect to pay at least $150 or so for it. You want publisher? That will raise the price to close to $300 for Office with Publisher.

Your major requires you to be able to handle spreadsheets, etc? Then consider OpenOffice, from http://www.openoffice.org as it is an Office Suite that opens Microsoft formatted documents, and most importantly, is FREE!

All of that said, take a ride down to the nearest Best Buy, and look at what Toshiba has to offer. You will find a wide range of products, and a wide range of prices… and for what you want to do… a $400 to $500 model Toshiba will handle EVERYTHING you point out that you want to do, and handle it with ease.

end of line
