How can cockroaches eat anything and survive in just about any condition?
just read and watched some documentaries about cockroaches and it says that they can eat just about anything with their relentless appetites including wood built inside walls of houses, book bindings, cardboard and stuff like that.
they would only eat that stuff if they could not find their first choice of food like decaying animals or garbage…
But still??? how can u eat wood and cardboard and continue to live on? where is the nutrition in those materials?
this might explain why they’ve been around since dinosaurs.
The cardboard is made up pulp which comes from trees, this pulp contains mostly cellulose just like wood. The cellulose is nothing but complex form of glucose molecules. But no animal is capable of digesting cellulose, hence in the intestine of cockroach, some symbiotic bateria are present which are capable of digesting cellulose( microbial fermentation) present in carboard and wood.
