Want to be a medical student?
I read a whole bunch of medical textbooks like Medical Assisting, Grey’s Anatomy (the book), Surgery Complications, Brain Surgery Made Easy, etc. during my free time. But I’m not really that eager about joining any medical programs..I’m very lazy..it’s my senior year and I haven’t applied to college yet…I keep putting it off, I haven’t taken my SAT ‘cuz I was in the hospital most of the time. It’s my senior year and I’m graduating in may this year..god I suck. Help me out? What do I need to do? I’ve been studying a lot of medical books but I’m not sure what I want to do..I was considering thoracic surgery, but then there’s optometry and I’m interested in dentistry now……………I don’t know what’s good for me! How do I get started? What’s the easiest major? I don’t want to end up majoring in biology…or maybe I do? I don’t know. Will health and nutrition be TOO easy?
Med school isn’t easy, and is really tough to get into to. A lot of med schools now won’t even take people who’s GPA was less than 3.0.
I would suggest starting with something a little more on the supportive care side, like say nursing. Nurses are really in demand, and you actually get to give more care then a doctor does. You can start with LPN, move up to RN, then BRN, then move to get your masters and do the Nurse Practitioner program.
Nurse practitioners get to do almost everything a doctor does, but doesn’t have the responsibility of a doctor. You still get to prescribe meds, and see patients just like a doctor, but you can choose to either open your own clinic, or work with doctors. It really is a good option. A lot of doctors will let you stand in for surgeries and most procedures.
Nursing school is much easier to get into, and the pre requisites aren’t as stringent as med school. You also don’t have to take the MCAT’s. There are a lot of tests, and they are tough, but the rewards are really good. I would never give up the time I had as a nurse, or in my practice. I would recommend this route to almost anyone who isn’t sure what they want to get into. Nursing gives you the option of working in a lot of different areas, and you can see what you really like, and what doesn’t really fit you.
