How are the issues of poverty addressed in the Southern US ?
I have been hearing about the poor in Mississippi and the Appalachia region of the South. I have been hearing how the state of Mississippi is the poorest state in the US because of low education and health issues. Recently, I saw an ABC news clip about the people of Appalachia suffering from low nutrition and dental problems, from drinking pops such as Mountain Dew . I wondered if these issues are being address in the Southern US.
I live in Alabama, and I know that here, more than any other state (except I think, Mississippi) we receive about twice as much money FROM the government as the state pays into it, which means we have many, many people on government assistance (welfare, medicaid, food stamps, whatever you wanna you call it).
The reason (in my opinion) is because our education levels are also at the bottom of the barrel. If we would focus on making sure our kids graduate, instead of letting them drop out right before finishing, then we would see an improvement in the quality of our state.
Your question….how are they being addressed? Well, by what I said….handing out government aid, instead of trying to actually help people find jobs and get an education.
