Conifer trees in the northwest, drought-tolerant trees?10pts!!?

How come there are so many Conifers in the Northwest if they are drought-tolerant trees? and why are pacific-northwest forests dominated by conifers?

Please help me with this. I really don’t seem to know the answer to this but I do know some things.

- Conifers needs for growth and nutrition:
* gymnosperms. they don’t need H2O for reproduction
* ecological
* they are decidcious trees, meaning they dont loose its leaves in the fall
* uses lots of water
* can grow in winter times b/c they dont loose leaves
* survives summer – sunlight & not a lot of water
* can photosynthesize when there’s sunlight and water

thats pretty much all i know …

so can someone explain this to me. i know there is no one right answer, but please help me get to the main points of it. thanks. i will give 10 pts and 5 stars to whoever figures this out for me! :)

Summer days are long but lack intense sunlight due to frequent cloud cover and the high latitude where the moist temperate coniferous forests & the boreal forests of the Northwest exist. The photosynthetic season is short and not very productive so evergreens were selected to keep their needle-like, cold tolerant leaves in order to be photosynthetic whenever temperatures allow. These trees do not need to store food in order to replace their canopy annually so the slow, steady photosynthetic activity is sufficient.

Broad leaved deciduous trees need a combination of summer warmth with sufficient sunlight intensity and duration to store enough food to both survive the winter dormancy and regrow an entire leaf canopy. Evergreens simply have been selected for traits to survive in locations that cannot support most deciduous trees.

Some conifers are somewhat drought tolerant in summer but this further restricts the total photosynthetic effort for the season since water is required for photosynthesis to proceed. Typically it is the lodgepole or ponderosa pines that grow in the rain shadow. The coastal sitka spruce and hemlock are dominant trees in some locations while western red cedar & western hemlock are a typical conifer mix in the wettest areas on the west side of the cascades.
The Olympic rainforest is primarily big leaf Maples, Sitka spruce and Cedar trees draped in lichen & mosses.
