Nutrition Rda Nutrients
Posted in Health and Nutrition on 08/28/2008 01:42 pm by Steven NerenbergHow were the RDA numbers established since it takes a ton of food to meet it.?
This has puzzled me for some time now. When RDA was first being researched and established how could they come up with the amount of vitamins and nutrients required for healthy nutrition when there has never been any foods in existence that can supply it without eating unrealistically large quantities.
Most of the foods I eat contain primarily vitamin C, A, niacin, a little iron, calcium and potassium and that’s it. How could they test for something that doesn’t exist or is impossible to achieve. Before RDA I’m sure we lived quite well otherwise we wouldn’t have made it this far.
Or was this established to give a boost to the vitamin supplement industry?
it is very hard to meet the RDA even with a diet based on whole foods. I would not say that supplementing with vitamins is essential but when you look at the cost the benefits are worth it. even certified organic vitamin supplements aren’t expensive.
the RDA was established in the late 60′s. the nutritional supplement industry was not a billion dollar industry until the 90′s.
in terms of healthy its more important to eat a varied diet. when there is a large variety of foods in the diet the chances of nutrient deficiencies are reduced since all foods have different nutrient profiles.
