Nutrition Science Major Careers

A Major and a Minor?????

Can I just major in one thing? Do I have to pick a minor? What are the benefits of a minor (besides learning more things)? I don’t want to have to take any extra classes or spend extra money if I don’t need to.

I plan on majoring in Nutrition/Dietetics and obtain my Bachelor of Science degree. I plan to get a Master’s for it as well. Should I have a minor? I don’t want a double major because that will be even harder with the classes I already plan on taking. I just want to know if it’s worth my time to get a minor? Is it THAT useful where you could use in any career? I want to be marketable and have a lot opening positions when I go search for a job.

No, you don’t need a minor. Most people complete college with a degree in one thing and that’s all they studied. If you want to take supplemental classes in a different area, you can always do that without minoring in something. There are people that say minors don’t make a difference at all and some that say it makes you more marketable, but it’s not necessary unless the two things are complementary.

For example, I’m majoring in Psychology with a minor in Business Administration. I want to go into marketing or HR, but I didn’t want to major in Business Administration. I wanted to come at it from a different angle so I could study what I love. Another example would be someone majoring in Journalism to minor in broadcast or some type if they want to be a news reporter. Yet another example would be someone majoring in education to get a minor in whatever subject they’d like to teach.

If you can’t think of something that you’d like to study that would complement your Nutrition degree, then don’t worry about it. Focus on your major, make good grades, be involved, and you’ll be fine.
