Proper Nutrition While Breastfeeding

Breastfeeding and Dieting?

My beautiful daughter is now 11 weeks old and I am exclusively breastfeeding. Unfortunately I have not lost any weight since coming home from the hospital. I have about 30 lbs to lose (20 from pregnancy and 10 from the extra weight I put on right before I got pregnant). I haven’t been exactly wathcing what I eat – I’ve been a pig eating some of those things I couldn’t eat while pregnant. My husband is going to start doing a high protein/no-low carb diet and says I should do it with him. I’m worried that my milk will dry up or I won’t get the proper nutrition. I was thinking about doing Slim-Fast – I’ve had luck with that in the past.

Any nursing mommies out there that can offer advice? Any health care folks that can give me advice? Is cutting out carbs OK while breastfeeding or do you need that too?

Help me — I’m tired of not having ANYTHING to wear except maternity clothes. I have to find a job but have nothing to wear to an interview!!!

I will say that dieting will decrease your milk supply unless you up the number of feedings or pump in between feedings to maintain supply. I would not do slim fast as you will not be getting enough calories or nutrients. A breastfeeding mother needs 300-400 extra calories a day over the recommended 1600-2000 calories per day. Of course that range may be different depending on what weight you are at now. I think it might be better to try your husband’s diet and make sure you continue taking your vitamins. Are you exercising at all. Might be good to incorporate a 40-60 walk (brisk) with your baby at least 4 times a week. Good luck loosing that weight.
