Can you get over anorexia by yourself?
From grades 8 – 10 I battled anorexia. It was never officially diagnosed by a doctor, but I’m pretty sure that’s what it was – I’d be OBSESSED with food, labels, nutrition, how I ate, I was losing hair – I’d try to stay around 800 calories. If I went over I’d feel so fat. I would look at my slowly shriveling body and think I was soo obese..
For about 6 months I had been doing better. I gained weight and looked healthy (my hair was finally coming in thicker). But now I’m starting to get worreid that I’m fat again.. I don’t understand. Will this ever go away? The more weight I lose, the fatter I feel. I just want to have a *normal* relationship with food.
I did it by myself, but it took 10+ years. I had to look at WHY I was doing it. It’s really not about food, or weight. It’s about control, lack of self-esteem, self-hatred, etc. So many things. It just manifests itself in the form of weight loss and food obsession. What happened to me: I had a heart attack, which terrified me. I decided I didn’t want to die. Got a little better weight wise but was still obsessed. Met a man who has CONVINCED me I’m not a bad person, never was. I’m smart, pretty, strong, all those good things. Got a little better. Gained the courage and self-esteem to go back to college after a 10 year hiatus. I’m excelling in school. Found my strenghts. I have gained control over my life, I AM smart and friendly and fun and generous…all the good things I never believed I was. I love life now. I love my body, and all of the weight I’ve gained. I am proud of myself in so many ways. It’s been a bitch, but I’ve made it! I consider myself extremely fortunate that my life has played out the way it has. I have experienced so much pain that now the good times are so beautiful. I know what it’s like to hurt, and I’m not going to put myself through that again. I deserve better, I always did!
Please take care and do whatever YOU need to do to get better. IT IS SO WORTH IT!
